Kane Mountain

Kane Mountain

Standing at 2,060 feet, Kane Mountain is a perfect outing for families and casual hikers alike. This hike offers a rewarding experience without venturing too far off the beaten path. Located just outside of Caroga Lake in the southern Adirondacks, this short and accessible hike leads to a classic fire tower summit with panoramic views of the surrounding forests and lakes.

Hikers can explore the summit using two well-marked trails that can be combined to create a scenic loop if you choose.

The East Trail is the more direct route to the top (& most popular) —climbing around 600 feet over 0.8 miles from the main trailhead on Green Lake Road. Once at the summit, you’ll find the historic fire tower, where panoramic views of the Caroga Lake region and surrounding wilderness await.

To descend, you can go back down the East Trail for an out-and-back. The alternative is to make the trip a loop by taking the North Trail, which offers a more gradual path down the mountain, stretching about 1.3 miles back to the trailhead. Together, the two trails form a satisfying 2.1-mile loop, perfect for a half-day outing filled with forest scenery, local history, and a rewarding vista.

At the top (standing at 60ft tall), hikers are greeted by the historic Kane Mountain Fire Tower, originally constructed in 1925 and still standing tall. Climb the tower for an even broader view that stretches across Canada Lake and the Caroga Lake region. It's especially scenic in the fall when the foliage blazes with vibrant color.

Whether you're chasing a peaceful morning walk or a relaxed afternoon adventure, Kane Mountain is a fantastic choice for soaking in some classic Adirondack beauty with minimal effort. Don’t forget your camera – the views are worth savoring.

Keep it PURE

Remember to Leave No Trace! Buy a physical map, read it, plan, and prepare. Think about the NYS Rangers and medical personnel that exhaust themselves for a rescue that could have been avoided. Pack out your trash. Use a bear canister when primitive camping and cook away from where you’re sleeping. Do the rock walk to help reduce the impact on fragile alpine vegetation. Camp at designated campsites and never camp on or near summits.
