Echo Cliffs

Echo Cliffs

Tucked away in the southern Adirondacks, the hike to Echo Cliffs offers a rewarding adventure with a big payoff for a relatively short trek. Located just outside the quiet hamlet of Piseco, this out-and-back trail is a local favorite for its sweeping views and tranquil setting.

Starting from the roadside trailhead on NY-8, the route climbs steadily through a mixed hardwood forest. The trail is well-marked and moderately steep, gaining about 675 feet in elevation over just under a mile. As you ascend, the sounds of traffic fade, replaced by birdsong and the rustle of wind through the trees.

After about 0.9 miles of hiking, you'll arrive at the open rock ledges of Echo Cliffs—a dramatic overlook perched above Piseco Lake. From here, expansive views stretch across the lake and surrounding hills, especially stunning in the fall when the foliage blazes with color. It's a perfect spot to pause, soak in the scenery, and enjoy a peaceful moment in the mountains.

This trail is a great option for a quick hike with a big reward, whether you're passing through the area or looking for a low-key outing. Just use caution near the cliffs, especially if hiking with children or pets.

Keep it PURE

Remember to Leave No Trace! Buy a physical map, read it, plan, and prepare. Think about the NYS Rangers and medical personnel that exhaust themselves for a rescue that could have been avoided. Pack out your trash. Use a bear canister when primitive camping and cook away from where you’re sleeping. Do the rock walk to help reduce the impact on fragile alpine vegetation. Camp at designated campsites and never camp on or near summits.
