Baxter Mountain is one of the most approachable summits in the Keene Valley corridor — a short, rewarding climb that delivers views well beyond what its modest elevation might suggest. Located just off Route 9N between Keene and Elizabethtown, it’s a natural starting point for families, newer hikers, or anyone looking to ease into the Adirondack backcountry. Baxter is also part of the Lake Placid 9er Hiking Challenge, making it an excellent early peak to build confidence and prepare your lungs for bigger days ahead. The trail crosses private land that’s been graciously opened to the public by its owners — a reminder that access here is a privilege worth protecting.

⚠️ Private Land — Tread Lightly This trail crosses privately owned land whose owners have generously kept it open to the public. There are no fees or permits required, but respect for the property is essential. Stay on the marked trail, pack out everything you bring in, and keep dogs under control. Continued public access depends on hikers treating this land with care.
The Trail

From the trailhead on Route 9N, the path climbs steadily through a mixed hardwood forest with well-maintained switchbacks that keep the grade manageable for most ability levels. The terrain is easy to moderate for the first stretch — the kind of trail that lets you settle into a rhythm and enjoy the woods. As you gain elevation, the forest thins and the trail steepens, with a few rocky sections near the top that add just enough challenge to make the summit feel earned. Break through the trees at the top and you’re rewarded with open views of the High Peaks to the west, Hurricane Mountain to the north, and the Ausable River valley stretching below. On a clear day, the panorama is genuinely stunning for a peak of this size.

🎒 What to Bring Baxter is a short hike, but the rocky upper section means sturdy footwear is worth it — trail runners or light hikers are ideal. Bring water, a layer for the summit (it’s often windier than the trailhead suggests), and sun protection if the canopy is down. Always do your research beforehand, and let a friend or family member know where you’re going and when to expect you back. A local hiking guide is worth considering for any skill level — they bring deep local knowledge and take the stress out of route planning. Packing lists for every trip type via Onward Guides →
’Dack Fact

In 2022, Chris and Audrey Hyson donated 107 acres on Baxter Mountain’s western shoulder to the Adirondack Land Trust, which transferred the land to New York State as an addition to the forever-wild Forest Preserve. The parcel includes a third of a mile of shoreline along the East Branch of the Ausable River — private landowners ensuring a piece of the Adirondacks stays wild for good.

Getting There

From Lake Placid, head east on Route 73 toward Keene. Continue through the hamlet of Keene and turn left onto Route 9N toward Elizabethtown. Drive about 2 miles to the top of the hill — the trailhead parking is on the right, marked by a DEC sign. If you reach Baxter Mountain Tavern, you’ve gone just a bit too far.

Check Before You Go Baxter’s summit is partially exposed and conditions can shift, especially in spring and fall. The upper trail can be icy in colder months. Always check current reports before heading out.
