While it is in the same region as Vanderwhacker Mountain and Mount Adams, Goodnow Mountain is more easily accessible than the other two – and the shorter, easier drive is another reason it’s a perfect choice for families. At the top, the fire tower adds excitement for young hikers and greatly improves the summit view.

The trail up Goodnow starts rolling and easy, and after a half-mile it reaches man-made steps and a low bridge over a bog. Here the trail steepens briefly before mellowing out again. At 1.4 miles, you’ll pass the remains of an old barn that once belonged to the owners of the mountain. From here, the summit is less than a half-mile away, with a gradual approach leading to rewarding views and the iconic fire tower.

Trailhead:
From Route 87, take exit 29 toward Newcomb. Turn left onto Blue Ridge Road and follow it for 19 miles until you reach 28N. Turn right onto 28N and continue for 8 miles until you see a DEC parking area on your left.
