A crisp November ascent of Snowy Mountain brought us through a landscape transitioning into winter. While the trail lacked snowpack, recent rainfall followed by freezing temperatures had left patches of ice, particularly on the steep final mile. Equipped with microspikes, we navigated the challenging terrain, especially the rugged push to the summit.
Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by the historic 45-foot steel fire tower, standing since 1917 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Climbing the tower rewarded us with panoramic views of the Adirondacks, including Indian Lake to the east and the High Peaks to the north. The intricate frost patterns on the tower’s structure added to the serene beauty of the moment.
A thermos of hot beverages and a well-earned snack break provided comfort as we took in the expansive vistas. The descent by headlamp marked the end of a memorable hike, with the warmth of a post-hike shower awaiting us.
