Following a decent snowfall winter in January and February, my friend Dave and I decided to do a backcountry ski trip out to Mt. Marcy. Starting from Adirondack Loj, the trip is about 7.4 miles one-way to the summit. After making sure we were prepared with all our necessary gear, we put on our skis and started our trip.

On a cold and breezy morning, we laced up our boots and clipped into our skis to test out the Three-Brook Loop Cross Country Ski Trail off of the Northville-Placid Trail in Long Lake.

The Foxy Brown Trail, named after Adirondack hermit Foxy Brown, is a multi-use 5.6-mile loop located within the Jessup River Wild Forest. Foxy Brown worked in logging around Lake Pleasant and Speculator before building himself a small log cabin in the backcountry outside of Piseco.

With our cross country skis in the back of the truck, we decided to scope out a trail that we had seen many times on our drives through the Tupper Lake area. We found access to the Deer Pond Loop via Route 30 near Upper Saranac Lake.

It was early November in the Northeast, but by the looks of the picture above you would think it was the middle of January. On November 7th my dad and I took a hike up the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway (about 5 miles in length).
