Further off the beaten track than the other Saranac 6ers, St. Regis Mountain is one of the areas hidden gems. With a near 360 degree view from the top, you can see all of the bodies of water that surround the St. Regis area, as well as the High Peaks off in the distance.

Less popular than the other Saranac 6ers, Scarface is a quiet hike that is nice to explore on days when you’re looking for some solitude. The view may not be quite as stunning as from some of the others, but there are still a handful of nice viewpoints close to the top, and the trail through a slightly wetland habitat provides unique scenery in the earlier parts of the hike.

McKenzie is the highest of the Saranac Lake 6ers, and at 10.5 miles round trip with 2,240 feet of elevation gain, it also has the longest ascent. The long ascent is worth it, however, as the view from the top doesn’t disappoint.

A moderate hike that is closer to Lake Placid and the High Peaks than the other Saranac 6ers, Haystack has beautiful views of Whiteface and Marcy, as well as some other nearby 46ers. With a trail that meanders past some brooks and streams, Haystack is a perfect hike for bringing along some canine companions.

One of the best peaks in the ‘dacks for new climbers (young and old alike), Baker Mountain is a nice moderate hike with one of the nicest views for such a quick ascent. The trail conveniently starts right in the village of Saranac Lake and itself is quite short-- perfect for a quick solo morning hike or a leisurely lunchtime hike with the whole family.
