Watch Hill | Indian Lake, NY

Watch Hill | Indian Lake, NY - Pure Adirondacks

Watch Hill, a modest mountain with magnificent vistas, begins with an easy forest path that leads to the base of the ascent. This trail is located on the Jessup River Wild Forest - Follow the foot track up to the ridge line and up to some brief, but highly enjoyable, portions of steep rock lips. Take in the views of Snowy Mountain to the west and a partial view of Indian Lake to the south.

The trail climbs 1.1 mile and 380 feet to the hill's apex before dropping 0.5 mile and 480 feet to Indian Lake's shoreline. One can either stop at the open ledge and do a return trip to the parking lot (2.2 miles round-trip) or if you want to add a little more distance to your journey, there is a spur route that leads down to the shore of Indian Lake and a rocky beach area (adding this portion makes it about a 3.2 miles round-trip).

Keep it PURE

Remember to Leave No Trace! Buy a physical map, read it, plan, and prepare. Think about the NYS Rangers and medical personnel that exhaust themselves for a rescue that could have been avoided. Pack out your trash. Use a bear canister when primitive camping and cook away from where you’re sleeping. Do the rock walk to help reduce the impact on fragile alpine vegetation. Camp at designated campsites and never camp on or near summits.
